A trip to Certaldo

Sunday we decided to go somewhere – anywhere – just to see something new and we ended up in a village called Certaldo which is situated about forty minutes away from Siena. It is a fantastic city with a medieval fortress / castle dominating the area. The castle is built on one of the many hills that are surrounding the city and being up there and gazing out on Toscana is a really special feeling. After we had been strolling around for some time checking out the small shops of handcraft and cheese and soaps we decided to sit down for a while at a café called “Giovanni Boccaccio”. There we had the best cup of cappuccino ever! Check out the picture! The people who work in the café are normal people but they are very skilled in doing patterns in the cream of the cappuccino coffee. It looked really difficult when they did it so I really admire them! It was such a great coffee shop actually because everyone was extremely friendly and really wanted to make our little “fika” something special. The weather was beautiful so we walked around in the castle taking pictures when suddenly we saw a sign that said that the famous medieval writer Giovanni Boccaccio had been born in Certaldo! Well that was great luck! And an explanation to why everything in the castle was named “Boccaccio” something! It felt like a real honour to check out the house where he used to live because he is so extremely famous and after we had done that they day couldn’t get any better so we went home!
